Managing Words in a Pack

A pack in Knoword isn’t just a list of words—it’s a set of interactive clues designed to challenge and engage players. While most packs use text-based definitions, Knoword also allows you to create image and audio clues to make your pack more dynamic.

In this guide, we’ll explore all the ways you can add words to your pack and customize the clues that go with them. We’ll also explain how to remove words from your pack so you can keep your word list perfectly tailored to your needs.

Getting started

Everything in this guide takes place in the pack editor, so if you’re following along, make sure you’ve already created a pack and have it open in edit mode.

If you need help editing a pack you’ve created, check out our guide on editing a pack.

Adding words to your pack

You can add words in several ways: create them manually, use auto-generated definitions, or import from your word bank. Each word supports text, image, or audio clues for versatile gameplay. Let’s examine each option in detail.

Text clues

The most common type of clue in a Knoword pack is a text-based definition—like a dictionary entry, a descriptive phrase, or a question. For example:

Clue: What is the Earth’s closest star called?
Answer: Sun

To add a word with a text clue:

  1. Click “Add words” on the right side of the pack editor.
  2. Select “Create new.”
  3. In the following form, enter the term in the Word field at the top.
  4. In the Text tab below, enter a clue or definition.
  5. (Optional) Choose a part of speech or add attribution to indicate where you sourced the definition from.
  6. Click “Save word.”

That’s it! You just added a new word to your pack.

Auto-define

If you don’t want to write definitions from scratch, Knoword can find dictionary definitions for you.

  1. Click “Add words” and select “Create new.”
  2. Enter a term in the Word field.
  3. Flip the “Automatic” switch below the tabs.
  4. If definitions are available, a list of options will appear.
  5. Click on the definition that works best—it will turn green when selected.
  6. Click “Save word.”

🔹 Quick note: The dictionary search is case-sensitive, so proper nouns (e.g., Toronto) may require capitalization to see results.

Image clues

Sometimes, a picture is the best way to describe a word or concept. Knoword allows you to upload your own images or search for high-quality photos to use as clues.

To add an image clue:

  1. Click “Add words” and select “Create new.”

  2. Enter the term in the Word field.

  3. Click the Image tab.

  4. Choose an image:

    • Upload an image: Drag and drop an image file or click the dashed area to browse your computer for a file.

    • Search for an image: Flip the “Automatic” switch to search for high-quality photos based on the word you entered. Click on a result to select it, then click “Next.”

⚡ Pro tip: You can specify alternative search terms in the field above your image results.

  5. (Optional) Add a caption to provide extra context. The image preview will update automatically to show you how your caption will appear in-game.

  6. (Optional) Enable side-by-side mode to display the image and its caption next to each other instead of as an overlay.

  7. (Optional) Add attribution to indicate where you sourced the image from. This field will only be visible for manually-uploaded images.

  8. Click “Save word.”

Audio clues

Audio clues allow players to listen to a sound or spoken phrase instead of reading a definition. This can be useful for language learning, auditory processing exercises, or simply adding variety to your pack.

To add an audio clue:

  1. Click “Add words” and select “Create new.”
  2. Enter the term in the Word field.
  3. Click the Audio tab.
  4. Choose an audio source:
    • Upload a file: Drag and drop an audio file or click the dashed area to browse your computer for a file.
    • Generate speech: Flip the “Automatic” switch, enter the text you want spoken, and click “Generate speech.”
  5. Click “Save word.”

If you want to record your own audio, you can use built-in tools like:

Word bank

If you’ve already created words in another pack and want to reuse them, Knoword’s word bank makes it easy to pull them into your new pack.

  1. Click “Add words.”
  2. Select “Word bank.”
  3. Browse or search for a word you’ve previously added.
  4. Click on a word to add or remove it—it turns green when added.

This is a great way to avoid recreating words you use frequently.

Removing words from your pack

Need to trim down your pack or fix a mistake? Removing words is simple:

  1. Select the word(s): Click the circle in the center of any word card to select it. The toolbar above your word grid will update to show:

    • The number of words selected
    • A red “Remove from pack” button
    • A “Deselect all” option (handy if you change your mind).

✨ Pro tip: You can select multiple words at once—just click each one you’d like to remove.

  2. Confirm removal: Click the red “Remove from pack” button to delete the selected words.

⚡ Good to know: Removed words aren’t gone forever! They’ll remain in your word bank, so you can easily add them back later if needed.
