Import Words
Knoword makes it easy to add words to your packs one at a time, but if you already have a list of terms, you can import them all at once instead. Knoword’s import tools allow you to seamlessly migrate word sets from another platform, collaborate with others on a spreadsheet, or let AI generate clues for you.
This guide will walk you through all the ways you can populate your pack with words en masse.
En masse (pronounced ahn MASS) is a French loan phrase meaning “all together,” “in a group,” or “in large numbers.”

Why import words?
Importing words saves time and unlocks powerful workflows. Here’s where it shines:
- Prep like a pro: Organize terms and clues in a spreadsheet (or collaborate with others) and import them in one click—perfect for large packs or team projects.
- Switch platforms seamlessly: Migrate existing study sets from tools like Quizlet or Kahoot without rebuilding them manually.
- Let AI do the heavy lifting: Provide just a word list, and Knoword’s AI can generate definitions automatically—ideal for jump-starting your pack.
Ready to import? Let’s explore how it works.
Upload a CSV file
If you’ve created a list of words in another program, you can upload a CSV (comma-separated values) file to add them to your pack in bulk.
- Click “Import words” next to the “Add words” button in the pack editor.
- Select the “Upload file” tab.
- Drag and drop your CSV file onto the page, or click the dashed area to browse your computer for a file.
💡 Did you know? You can save any spreadsheet as a CSV file:

- Google Sheets: How to save as CSV
Matching your columns
Once you upload your file, a preview will appear showing a few rows from your spreadsheet. You’ll need to match the columns to their respective fields:
- Solution: The word that players must guess.
- Definition: The clue or description of the word.
- Part of speech (optional): The word’s grammatical category.
- Attribution (optional): The source of the definition.
If your spreadsheet includes column headers, you can specify whether the first row should be skipped during import.
Once everything is set, click “Import words” to finish adding them to your pack.
Copy/paste CSV text
Some platforms, like Quizlet, allow you to export word sets as text. If you want to transfer your Quizlet sets into Knoword, you can do so without downloading a CSV file at all.
- Export your Quizlet set by following these instructions.
- Copy the text provided by Quizlet.
- In your Knoword pack editor, click “Import words” and select the “Copy/paste” tab.
- Paste the text into the input field below the tabs.
- Click “Next.”
- Match the columns to the correct fields as described above.
- Click “Import words.”
Your Quizlet set is now a Knoword pack! 🎉
