Packs 101
Packs are at the heart of Knoword. They’re like interactive flashcards—custom sets of terms and clues that you can play as a game. Whether you’re studying for a test, reinforcing key vocabulary, or just looking for a fun challenge, packs let you focus on specific subjects or skills.
They’re flexible, customizable, and can be played in classic typing mode or as a multiple-choice quiz.
This guide will walk you through what packs are, how to find one that fits your needs, and how to start playing.

Why use packs?
Packs are great for classroom activities, independent study, or a quick brain teaser.
Many teachers use them to help students review vocabulary before a quiz or exam, while students can use them to practice at their own pace. Since packs cover a wide range of subjects and difficulty levels, they can be adapted to fit almost any learning goal.
With thousands of packs created by students and teachers, there’s a good chance you’ll find one that matches whatever you’re studying.
Finding the perfect pack
There are a couple of ways to discover new packs:
- Browsing: Visit the packs page to explore popular packs.
- Searching: Use the search bar at the top of any page to look for a specific topic.
Using filters
To narrow down your search, you can filter packs by:
- Category: Select a subject area.
- Language: Find packs written in different languages.
- Sorting options: Sort by most played, number of words, or recently updated.
Collections
Some packs are part of a collection. Collections are created by the same person who made the pack(s) within them, and help keep packs organized by theme, subject, class, or any other common feature.
You’ll see collections in search results, and if a pack belongs to one, you can view the other packs in that collection by:
- Clicking the pack actions menu (three dots in the top-right corner of a pack card).
- Selecting “View collection.”
Playing a pack
Once you’ve found a pack you like, getting started with a game is simple:
- Click on the pack card to open the pre-game screen.
- Choose a game mode (more on these below).
- Set a time limit, or turn the timer off completely.
- Select a UI language if you want the game interface in a different language.
☝️ Remember: The clues and answers in a pack are written in the language chosen by its creator, and this can’t be changed. If you’re looking for content in a specific language, make sure to preview the pack first:
- Click the pack actions menu.
- Select “Preview.”
Game modes
Knoword offers three different ways to play:
- Classic: See a clue (usually a definition) and the first letter of the answer. Type the correct word as quickly as you can.
- Multiple choice: Instead of typing, choose the correct answer from three options. Great for younger learners or quick recognition practice.
- Image match: See a word and select the correct image from three options. Ideal for visual learning and early readers.
Each mode offers a unique challenge, so try them all to see which one works best for you!
Bookmarking a pack
If you want to save a pack for later, you can bookmark it.
- Open the pack actions menu and select “Bookmark.”
- Bookmarked packs appear in My bookmarks, which you can access from the user menu in the top right corner of any page.
- To remove a pack from your bookmarks, open the pack actions menu and select “Unbookmark.”
⚠️ Heads up: You must be signed in to a Knoword account to bookmark packs.
