Packs 101

Knoword packs function like interactive flash cards, offering incredible versatility that makes them a powerful tool for both teachers and students across a wide range of subjects.

They've gained particular popularity in language learning environments and ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, where the platform's focus on vocabulary helps students build and retain new language skills with ease.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about packs.

Gameplay

Packs provide players with a variety of gameplay options. Before starting any pack, you can customize your experience by setting a time limit or disabling the timer altogether for a more relaxed pace. You can also choose between our classic mode, where you type the word based on its definition and first letter, and our simple mode, where you match the correct word to its definition from three choices.

Browsing and discovering packs

The browse packs page makes it easy to find the perfect pack for your classroom or study session. You can search for specific packs using a search term, or filter them based on their category or language. In addition to filtering, you can sort packs by several criteria:

Whether you're searching for a specific subject or exploring new topics, you're likely to find a Knoword pack that fits your needs. And if you don't find exactly what you're looking for, don't worry—it's easy to create your own custom pack.

Creating and editing packs

Any logged-in user can create a pack by clicking the purple Create... button on the right side of the page header beside your avatar, then selecting Create a pack or Generate a pack.

All the packs you create can be accessed from your packs dashboard page.

Add words

The pack editor offers three ways to add words to your pack:

  1. Search existing words: You can search from words you've previously created.

  2. Create a new word: You can create text-based definitions or, if you prefer visual aids, press the Image button to upload or search for an image clue.

    • In Manual mode, you have complete control over each word and its definition, entering terms one by one to tailor the pack to your needs.
    • In Auto mode, Knoword will find relevant dictionary definitions or photos for the terms you enter, and you select the ones you'd like to use.
  3. Import from CSV: Quickly populate a pack by uploading a CSV file with your terms and definitions. Click the Import words button beside the Add words button, upload your file, and select which columns should represent the solution and definition for each term. This is ideal if you prefer organizing your word list in a spreadsheet before importing it into Knoword.

Upload a cover image

Uploading a cover image helps give your pack a polished, cohesive look that stands out. When you upload a cover image, you'll also have the option to choose a color scheme based on the colors in the image. For the best results, we recommend using a JPG or PNG file that is at least 600x800 in size.

Pack actions

The pack actions menu gives you a range of powerful options to interact with Knoword packs. This menu is found in the top right corner of each pack card, and on the right side of each row in your packs dashboard.

Star pack

To save packs you enjoy or want to revisit later, simply select the Star this pack action. Starring packs is a convenient way to curate a collection of materials for your class or personal use. You can access your starred packs from the user menu under My Stars.

Preview terms

Before using a pack in your classroom, it's important to make sure its content aligns with your lesson plan. The Preview terms action lets you review the pack's words and definitions at a glance, helping you determine if it's the right fit for your class.

Need a physical copy of your pack? The Download PDF action allows you to export your packs in two formats:

You can customize the PDF by adjusting the paper size, flash card dimensions, and worksheet settings. Options include hiding the first letter hint or adding a word bank at the top of the exercise.

Duplicate pack

The duplicate pack action allows you to create an exact copy of any pack you've created. This feature is especially useful for adapting a pack to different languages, subjects, or student groups without starting from scratch. When duplicating a pack, all the words and settings are copied over. You can then customize the new pack by giving it a different name, assigning it to a new collection, and changing its category or language as needed.

Assign pack

Using the Assign pack action, teachers can create an assignment based on a specific pack. For more information about Assignments, check out our guide on the subject.
