How to Play

Knoword is a game where you're given the definition of a word and the letter that the word begins with. It's your job to guess the word or skip to move on to the next one. How many words can you guess correctly before time runs out?

You can press the esc key to skip the current word without moving your hands off the keyboard.

Some words may contain multiple definitions, indicated by clickable numbers at the top of the screen. You can also press the tab key to toggle between the different definitions.

As you answer words correctly, the hint meter will fill up around the circumference of the skip button. If you answer 5 words correctly in a row, the skip button will turn into a hint button. Now, when you click the hint button or press the esc key, the next letter in the word will be revealed.

Knoword plays sound effects any time you skip a word, guess correctly, earn a hint, or use a hint. If you prefer to play without sound effects, you can disable them by clicking on the speaker icon in the top right corner of the screen.

To quit or restart the game, you can do so from the game menu by clicking on the settings icon in the top right corner of the screen.

Now you know how to play the game, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Users can also create custom sets of words, called packs that you can play in the same classic style as described above, or as a multiple choice quiz that we call simple mode. You can also choose to play without a time limit to test your knowledge of a subject without the added pressure of time counting down.

You can do all sorts of other things with packs, like generate them automatically based on a prompt, use images as clues instead of text definitions, or download them as printable worksheets. They're an extremely versatile tool for learning any subject. To learn more, check out our guide to Knoword packs.
